stopped the clock centuries ago: the Amish. This community, known for its
deliberate rejection of most modern conveniences, including electricity, cars,
and fashionable clothes, presents a fascinating contrast to the contemporary
living that many of us take for granted.
The history of the Amish in America
begins in the 18th century, when the
first immigrants arrived from Europe, fleeing religious persecution. They
settled primarily in Pennsylvania, and today, the state is still home to the
largest Amish population in the country. However, significant communities also
exist in Ohio, Indiana, and other midwest states.
What sets the Amish apart, beyond their
signature attire and mode of transportation in horse-drawn buggies, is their
dedication to the Ordnung. The Ordnung is a set of unwritten rules that govern
every aspect of Amish life, from haircuts to prohibiting the use of advanced
technology. This code is based on its interpretations of the Bible and aims to
maintain simplicity, humility, and detachment from the outside world.
Agriculture remains a central activity
for the Amish, and many of them are expert farmers who use traditional farming
techniques. However, not all Amish are farmers today; some have adapted to
maintain businesses that do not contradict their principles, such as carpentry,
furniture building, and handicraft production.

use. Similarly, although they generally avoid using modern technology, they can

community-operated schools through eighth grade, the age after which formal
education ends.. This educational model is designed to prepare young people for
life in the Amish community by teaching them the agricultural, domestic, and
crafts skills they’ll need.
Tourism has become an important part of
the interaction between the Amish and the outside world.. Visitors flock in
large numbers to experience a glimpse of their way of life and purchase
handmade goods. This contact, although controlled, provides a vital source of
income for many Amish families.
The Amish’s commitment to a way of life
many would consider archaic is, for them, a profound act of faith and an
expression of cultural resistance. In a world that values technological
progress and consumerism, the Amish remind us of the power and possibility of a
simpler, more deliberate life.
